A fold-out album insert can turn into a puzzling arrangement of photographs and text once it is spread across a table. Its folds are part of how the information reaches the reader.
Follow the opening sequence
Handle the insert carefully and avoid forcing a fragile fold. Begin with the panel visible inside the sleeve, then note what appears as it opens. A caption may belong to the image beside it in the folded arrangement rather than the nearest image when fully extended.
Take reference photographs if useful, preserving the sequence as well as the overall sheet. Keep private details in gift notes out of anything you share publicly.
Make your catalogue note navigable
Describe a credit’s location as an identifiable panel or section instead of inventing page numbers that are not printed. If you add your own numbering for research, label it as yours.
Before returning the insert, check its original folding direction and fit. Your notes can preserve the reading order without repeatedly unfolding the object. This small attention to format makes later questions about lyrics, credits and photographs much easier to answer from the record you already have.
